For most Ottawa restaurants, cafés, bakeries, food trucks and takeout counters, Square is the best place to start for online ordering and pickup. It combines a free entry plan, a restaurant-friendly online menu, pickup controls, payment processing and direct connection to Square POS. Stripe offers much more custom-development freedom, and Shopify is stronger for a product catalogue that also ships, but neither is as simple as Square for the typical local food order.
That short answer needs context. Square, Stripe and Shopify are not three identical products. Square is an all-in-one payments, point-of-sale and commerce system. Stripe is payment infrastructure that a developer can use to build almost any checkout. Shopify is a complete ecommerce platform built primarily around products, inventory and multichannel retail. This comparison explains what an Ottawa or Ontario business actually gets, what it costs, how secure it is, how much the design can be customized and how difficult setup really is.
Canadian prices and public features were checked on August 17, 2026. Prices exclude tax and can change. Hardware, optional apps, premium themes, delivery, currency conversion, international cards, chargebacks and custom development may add cost. Confirm the live provider page before signing a contract.

First: payments are not the same as online ordering
An online payment button can collect C$25, but a restaurant online ordering system must do much more. It may need menu categories, sizes, add-ons, cooking notes, sold-out items, taxes, tips, scheduled pickup, kitchen cut-off times, location selection, email or text confirmations, refunds and a clear order queue for staff.
This distinction matters most with Stripe. A Stripe Payment Link is easy to create, but a collection of payment links is not a practical restaurant menu. Customers need a cart, modifiers and a pickup promise; staff need a usable ticket. Stripe can power all of that, but someone must design and build the system around its payment tools.
Square and Shopify supply more of the surrounding commerce system out of the box. Square is shaped around local selling and restaurant operations. Shopify is shaped around an ecommerce catalogue and fulfilment. That is why the best platform cannot be decided from the payment percentage alone.
Price comparison in Canada
Square pricing
Square advertises a C$0 Square Online plan and charges 2.8% + C$0.30 for standard online card transactions. Its online-ordering page lists paid plans from C$36+, while its general Canadian pricing page lists Square Plus packages from C$35+ depending on the business package. The free route is unusually useful for a new Ottawa takeout business because it can validate online demand before adding a larger software bill.
Square's Canadian in-person rate is currently 2.5% for credit cards and 0.75% + 7¢ for in-person Interac debit. Hardware and advanced restaurant features cost extra, so a business replacing its complete POS should price the entire counter and kitchen setup—not only the online page.
Stripe pricing
Stripe's standard Canadian pricing has no setup fee or monthly processing fee and charges 2.9% + C$0.30 for a successful domestic online card transaction. Stripe also lists an additional 0.8% for international cards and 2% where currency conversion is required. Its in-person rate for most cards is 2.7% + C$0.05.
The hidden cost is not a secret fee from Stripe; it is the software around Stripe. A simple Payment Link may take minutes. A custom online food ordering website may require design, development, hosting, database work, order notifications, testing and ongoing maintenance. That investment can be worthwhile when the workflow is unique, but it makes Stripe the hardest option to compare using only a monthly-price table.
Shopify pricing
Shopify Basic in Canada is currently C$49 per month when paid monthly or C$37 per month when billed yearly. Its standard domestic online card rate starts at 2.8% + C$0.30 with Shopify Payments. Shopify also lists a 2% third-party transaction fee on Basic when a merchant uses an outside payment provider instead of Shopify Payments. That third-party fee is in addition to what the outside processor charges, so most small Canadian stores should understand the full cost before connecting a different gateway.
Shopify includes hosting, an SSL certificate, a full online store, themes and inventory features. Advanced in-store retail tools under POS Pro are listed as an additional C$119 per month per location. Apps, premium themes and custom development can increase the total.
What the processing fee looks like on a real order
For a standard domestic online card, before tax on the software and without international-card or optional-service charges:
| Order value | Square 2.8% + 30¢ | Stripe 2.9% + 30¢ | Shopify Basic + Shopify Payments 2.8% + 30¢ |
|---|---|---|---|
| C$25 | C$1.00 | C$1.03 | C$1.00 plus plan cost |
| C$50 | C$1.70 | C$1.75 | C$1.70 plus plan cost |
| C$100 | C$3.10 | C$3.20 | C$3.10 plus plan cost |
Square saves only a few cents per standard online order compared with Stripe. That is not enough by itself to declare a winner. Square wins our restaurant recommendation because the ordering page, pickup settings, POS and kitchen flow can be connected with less custom work. Shopify's transaction rate is competitive, but the subscription is justified mainly when the business needs Shopify's wider ecommerce system.
Security: which platform is safest?
All three are serious payment providers. Square states that it meets PCI DSS Level 1, encrypts sensitive payment data and uses two-factor authentication and access controls in its own systems. Stripe is certified as a PCI Service Provider Level 1 and helps merchants complete the appropriate PCI validation based on their integration. Shopify says it is Level 1 PCI DSS compliant and that Shopify-powered stores are compliant by default.
Those statements do not mean every business configuration is automatically risk-free. The largest practical risks for a local operator are often reused passwords, a stolen staff login, excessive employee permissions, an unpatched device, a fraudulent order, a malicious app or a developer handling raw card data incorrectly.
Security responsibilities for an Ottawa business
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for owners and administrators.
- Give each employee a separate account and only the permissions required for the job.
- Never collect full card details through email, a contact form or a normal text message.
- Use the provider's hosted fields, checkout or approved SDK so card data does not pass through ordinary website code.
- Review refunds, disputes, unusual order size and mismatched customer information.
- Remove accounts immediately when staff or contractors leave.
- Keep the ordering device, browser and POS software updated.
Custom website design comparison
Square: enough customization for most local restaurants
Square Online offers mobile-ready themes and controls for colours, fonts, images and layout. A restaurant can import menu information, connect a custom domain on eligible paid plans and link the ordering page from a separate branded website. This is normally enough to make ordering feel consistent with the restaurant without rebuilding every commerce function.
The tradeoff is that the ordering flow still behaves like Square. A designer can improve the surrounding website, food photography, menu presentation and calls to action, but cannot treat every Square screen like a blank canvas.
Stripe: the most custom, but someone must build it
Stripe spans three very different levels. Payment Links are no-code and quick but have limited design controls. Hosted Stripe Checkout is low-code and provides controlled branding. Stripe Elements and APIs can support a deeply custom payment and ordering interface with the highest design freedom of these three choices.
That freedom also creates responsibility. Developers must build the menu, cart, modifiers, pickup logic, order storage, confirmation flow and staff tools. Stripe is the best choice when a business needs rules that an off-the-shelf restaurant platform cannot handle—not merely because the owner wants a different button colour.
Shopify: strong storefront themes, commerce-shaped structure
Shopify has a large theme and app ecosystem, strong product pages and flexible storefront sections. A skilled Shopify designer can create a highly branded retail experience. Standard plans still have platform rules around checkout, and Shopify's pricing page reserves a fully customizable checkout for Shopify Plus. For a restaurant menu, modifiers and preparation timing may require apps or custom work because Shopify's core model starts with products and fulfilment rather than a kitchen.
How easy is each one to set up?
Square setup difficulty: 2 out of 5
- Create and verify the Square business account.
- Add the restaurant location, taxes, hours and fulfilment rules.
- Import or build menu categories, items, prices and modifiers.
- Set pickup windows, preparation times, cutoffs and curbside instructions.
- Choose a theme, add the logo and food photography, and connect the domain or website button.
- Place test orders on a phone and confirm the POS, printer or kitchen display receives them correctly.
Square says restaurants can start from a PDF or an existing marketplace menu, which can reduce data entry. The difficult part is not the page builder; it is making sure every modifier, tax, sold-out item, preparation time and staff notification works during a busy period.
Shopify setup difficulty: 3 out of 5
- Create the store, choose a plan and connect Shopify Payments.
- Build the catalogue and organize products or menu items.
- Configure locations, pickup, local delivery, tax and notification settings.
- Select and customize a theme.
- Add apps if the menu needs advanced modifiers, time slots, tipping or restaurant-specific printing.
- Test inventory, pickup availability, notification emails and checkout on mobile.
Shopify's own pickup feature is straightforward for stocked products: customers choose a pickup location, see an expected pickup date and can receive a ready-for-pickup notification. Complexity rises when a food menu needs ingredient choices, kitchen timing and day-specific availability.
Stripe setup difficulty: 1 out of 5 for a payment link, 4–5 out of 5 for a complete order system
A Stripe Payment Link can be created without code and Stripe rates its integration effort at 1/5. That is useful for a deposit, a fixed catering package or one simple item. A real online ordering menu is different. A custom Stripe system normally requires database design, secure server code, API keys, webhooks, cart logic, taxes, order states, notifications, refunds, testing and monitoring.
Stripe is therefore simultaneously the easiest way to add one payment link and the hardest way to build the complete restaurant workflow in this comparison.
Which platform do people use more in Ottawa?
There is no trustworthy public dataset showing exact Square, Stripe and Shopify market share among Ottawa restaurants. A company logo on a checkout page is also imperfect evidence because Stripe often operates behind another platform, while Square and Shopify are more visible to customers. We would not invent a local percentage.
At the broader platform level, Shopify publicly describes itself as serving millions of merchants. That makes it highly recognizable for ecommerce. Stripe is widely embedded as payment infrastructure in custom websites and software. Square is especially visible at local counters and in small-business POS environments. These are different kinds of adoption, not a fair one-number popularity contest.
Our practical inference for Ottawa: Square is the most natural starting point when the same business sells at a counter and takes direct pickup orders online. Shopify is more natural when the website is primarily a store with many shippable products. Stripe is more natural when a custom developer is already involved or when the business rules are unusual.
What an Ottawa restaurant actually needs from online ordering
Before choosing software, write down the real service flow. A strong online food ordering setup should answer these questions:
- Can customers easily find the menu from Google and from the home page?
- Are pickup hours different from dining-room hours?
- How many orders can the kitchen accept in each 15-minute window?
- Can customers choose sizes, toppings, sides and allergy-related options clearly?
- Can staff mark an item sold out without calling the web designer?
- Will the online menu and counter POS share prices and inventory?
- Does the customer receive an accurate pickup time and clear parking instructions?
- Does the system handle Ontario tax settings, tips and refunds correctly?
- Would English and French menu content help the audience?
- Is the website fast, accessible and easy to use with one hand on a phone?
The lowest payment fee cannot rescue a confusing menu or a kitchen that receives orders in the wrong place. Operational fit is worth more than a tenth of a percentage point.
Best choice by business type
Choose Square for:
- A pizza shop, shawarma counter, bakery, café, food truck or quick-service restaurant.
- A business that wants pickup, curbside or direct local delivery without building custom software.
- A restaurant that already uses Square POS or wants one connected vendor.
- A new operator that wants to begin on a free online plan and upgrade later.
Choose Stripe for:
- A custom website with unusual checkout rules, deposits, memberships or subscriptions.
- A catering business that needs tailored quotes and payment schedules.
- A software product or multi-vendor concept where payments are one part of a larger application.
- A business with a developer who can maintain webhooks, APIs and order logic.
Choose Shopify for:
- A specialty grocer, bakery merchandise brand, packaged-food company or retailer with shipping and pickup.
- A large product catalogue with inventory across multiple retail locations.
- A brand that values themes, ecommerce apps, product merchandising and sales channels.
- A store whose pickup workflow is based on inventory availability rather than kitchen capacity.

Our final ranking for most Ottawa food businesses
- Square — best overall. The combination of online ordering, pickup controls, POS sync, kitchen routing, a free starting plan and slightly lower standard online pricing makes it the strongest default.
- Shopify — best for retail plus pickup. It costs more each month, but the storefront, inventory and ecosystem are valuable when products and shipping are central.
- Stripe — best custom foundation, not the easiest ready-made restaurant system. It can produce the most tailored result, but a complete ordering operation must be built around it.
This is not a claim that Square wins every category. Stripe wins custom development flexibility. Shopify wins product-centred ecommerce breadth. Square wins the specific job most Ottawa restaurants are trying to do: let a customer choose food, pay securely, select pickup and send a clear order into the operation without a large technical project.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best online ordering system for an Ottawa restaurant?
Square is the best default for many Ottawa restaurants, cafés, food trucks and takeout counters because its online menu, pickup settings, payments, POS, inventory and kitchen workflow can work together. Shopify is usually stronger for product-heavy retail, while Stripe is best when a developer is building a custom ordering experience.
Which is cheaper in Canada: Square, Stripe or Shopify?
For standard domestic online card payments, Square lists 2.8% plus 30 cents, Stripe lists 2.9% plus 30 cents, and Shopify Basic with Shopify Payments starts at 2.8% plus 30 cents. Square and Stripe can start without a monthly platform fee, while Shopify Basic has a monthly subscription. Total cost also depends on hardware, apps, development, card type and optional paid plans.
Can Stripe run a restaurant online ordering menu by itself?
Stripe can accept payments through Payment Links or Checkout, but it is not by itself a complete restaurant ordering system. A custom build or third-party integration is normally needed for a full menu, modifiers, pickup times, kitchen capacity, order status and restaurant operations.
Is Square or Shopify better for local pickup?
Square is usually easier for a food business already using or planning to use Square POS. Shopify is often better for a retailer that ships products and also offers pickup at one or more stores. The best choice depends on whether the business behaves more like a restaurant or an ecommerce catalogue.
Are Square, Stripe and Shopify secure?
All three maintain high-level PCI payment security programs, but no platform removes every merchant responsibility. Businesses still need strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, limited staff access, secure devices, trusted integrations and careful fraud review.
Can Ontario Webs build a restaurant website with an online ordering menu?
Yes. Ontario Webs can design a fast, mobile-friendly Ottawa business website and connect the ordering approach that fits the menu, pickup process, budget and existing point-of-sale system.
